Below i’ve listed 10 ways you could model water, then i have also included the advantages/disadvantages of such types.

1) E-Z Water

Adv: Looks great

Dis: Needs heat gun and stove burner heat ups near scenery (needed to smooth shorelines) can damage things; makesless convincing waves than acrylic gloss medium.

2) Plaster H2O + Paint + Acrylic gloss medium

Adv: Best for simulating unclear H2O (E.G. muddy creek); Photographs well

Dis: Doesn’t simulate depth as well as some other methods

3) EnviroTex + gloss mediu gel (e.g., water gel from polyterrain)

Adv: Great looking; best for simulating waves probably the best method considering overall results

Dis: EnviroTex has cumbersome mixing process; needs propane torch to pop bubbles. Polyterain gel is the only method we found for waterfalls

4) Envirotex

Adv: Great looking; best for still water

Dis: Cumbersome mixing process; needs propane torch to pop bubbles

5) Casting resing, (E.G. Natcol Crafts Inc. or Castin’Craft)

Adv: Great looking;ripples naturally as it sets up

Dis: Stinks really bad, unhealther fumes, must be poured in thin 1/8″ layers

6) Acrylic gloss medium (E.G. liquitex, or loss from Poly terrain)

Adv: Great looking;no mixing; best for waves; easy to texture; no leaking or dripping

Dis: Must be applied in thin layers; and when you add color, because it’s white, you can’t tell how it will look until it dries.

7) Real H20

Adv: Cheap

Dis: Flows way too fast for scaled down model; evaporates; stagnates; high maintenance

8 ) Acrylic ceiling tile

Adv: Easy, Cheap

Dis: Doesn’t simulate depth as well as some other methods; fails the “wet look” test

9) Acrylic shower door

Adv: Easy

Dis: Doesn’t simulate depth as well as some other methods; fails the “wet look” test

10) Gloss paint

Adv: Cheap, easy, photographs well

Dis: Very poor depth simulation; doesn’t look like H2O
